Peer Tutoring Program

Peer tutoring is an educational approach that joins students from grades K-5 with older students from Grade 6. Peer Tutoring is a leadership training program. Older students assume the role of tutor to develop academic skills and confidence in reading, math facts, spelling and study reviews. Peer tutors are assigned to the tutoring room or individual class room. Peer tutor referrals are made by teachers, the guidance counselor, the principal or by parent request. Peer tutors take on the role of helper as well as leader. Criterion for selection of Peer Helpers includes:

  1. The student must achieve the grade of 85% or higher in all subject areas.
  2. The student must have demonstrated qualities of leadership within the school.
  3. The student must have shown responsibility through good work habits, promptness, dependability and homework completion.
  4. The student must have demonstrated good conduct including the following qualities: self-control, showing respect, being courteous and polite to others.
  5. The student must have demonstrated empathy and the concern for others.
  6. The student MUST NOT have excessive absenteeism or tardiness from school or this program.

The research literature on peer tutoring is extensive and international studies have clearly shown that peer interaction is conducive to a host of important early achievements, such as:

  • children's understanding of fairness
  • their self-esteem
  • habits towards sharing and kindness
  • their acquisition of role-taking and communication skills
  • their development of creative and critical thinking
